The Last Song I'll Write For You (2012): Single Review

“The Last Song I’ll Write For You” was released in 2012, one year after the release of Cook’s sophomore record This Loud Morning. It premiered on American Idol before it was available for download. The song, in my humble opinion, is the last sort of song that sounds like David Cook and This Loud Morning, in the instrumentation and production. His newer stuff sounds a little “cleaner”, but maybe that’s just me. I’m not complaining at all either. It starts with a sweet, catchy, little riff from the electric guitar before the rest of the instrumentation kicks in with the drums and acoustic guitar. The song is very driven by the acoustic guitar which is a bit of a departure from some of Cook’s other songs. A similar sound to “Lie” on the 2008 release of David Cook. Lyrically though the song is a little more hopeful, despite being about the ending of a relationship. Cook sings about how he’d been waiting for the relationship to hit this point and that he’s sort of already come to terms with the end, “We just drifted apart/Two beats in two different hearts”. The chorus is catchy and it is still clear that Cook is capable of writing a damn good hook. Following the bridge is a cute, simple sounding guitar solo that does its job in transitioning the rest of the song into its final chorus. I also love the way the song ends, on a quieter note of just Cook’s voice down the octave, supported by only the acoustic guitar. The song was enough to wet the appetite of Cook’s eager fans wanting to hear more and more music from him. I just wish Cook would play this song live more despite its absence from being on any full album. The song is beautiful.
