New sound from David Cook?

Reds Turn Blue is just around the corner. Finally some new music. It’s been over a year and a half since “Death Of Me” surprised us. I say surprised us because a single from Cook 8 months after the release of a full project caught me off guard. A welcomed surprise for sure.
With the news of the new single dropping June 26, talk of new music was inevitable. Well… on this blog it is. I guess one of my favourite “single” drops from Cook was Gimme Heartbreak. On that day the Pledge Music campaign for the new EP that ended up being Chromance was also announced and incentives/pledges were available to purchase. It was an exciting day, because a promise of more music was met just as the new single arrived.
So… Reds Turn Blue. As some of you probably know, this is a song Cook has played a couple times before. The first time was back in December of 2019 in Nashville. But the first time I heard the song was on a live stream on StageIt in April I think. He played the song acoustically. And it was great, I really enjoyed it. What was most intriguing to me however was Cook’s built up mystique towards the song. First of all, he made a point to mention that the song title “isn’t political” but that we’d find out pretty soon what the title means. So that’s exciting. Has he really built up the meaning behind the title of a track/single before? I don’t think so. Second of all, the way he was playing the song was… different? Different than what his newer songs had been sounding like. It sounded harder. Like he’s maybe dipping back into the rock genre. Also, I did go listen to the live version, and it basically confirmed what I thought. Guitars and drums is what I remember about the tune. I’ve only heard the song twice, once on StageIt and then the live version once. I like to build up my anticipation as much as possible, and not listening to the live version helps with that. Does anyone else do that? I think I also just don’t want to build up all of these expectations of how the song should sound (production, timing, mix etc.) in the studio version.
Now to guess what the track means. Reds Turn Blue. Is he maybe stating he’s turning the cinematic pop genre back into the rock genre? I don’t know if he’d dedicate a song to announce his change in direction for music though. That being said the “David Cook” text in the single art looks like a mix between his old “David Cook” logo and the new logo on Digital Vein and Chromance. So maybe he’s mixing the sounds?
Maybe he’s going to be a Dad? Turning into a parent. Eggs turning blue. Super metaphorical. I don’t have many theories passed that, but I’d love to hear what you think the title means. Let me know in the comments. I would love to hear from you.
