Thoughts on the New EP

So... we have a lot to talk about.

Back in June David Cook released the lead off single "Gimme Heartbreak". The response felt very positive. The song was obviously a different sound and Cook confirmed that the following EP will be going in a different direction then his previous albums. I'll be honest, when I first heard the song, I didn't know what to think of it for about a month. I wasn't sure if I loved it, or hated it. And then it finally clicked, the reason I was so unsure was because I was reluctant somewhat to follow Cook down this change of sound. I realized "Gimme Heartbreak" was a good tune but was wanting the "rock" side of David. Finally, I got excited. I had the song up loud in the car and remembered that Cook is evolving and just because his sound is changing doesn't mean his old albums disappear. I still have those older songs to go back to and now we'll have a different side of Cook to look forward to. And as soon as I got into that mind set, I got very, very excited to hear what the sound will be like on the upcoming EP (as I have held out listening to "Ghost Magnetic" and "The Lucky Ones" until the release of the album).

Now, I'll admit I had another minor trepidation for the new EP. And that is just that. An EP? Not an album? Damn, I want as much music as possible, give us an album not an EP. But this mindset changed quickly also. I was watching and interview with Mr. Cook and he too was apprehensive at the idea of making an EP, he wanted to have an album as a landscape to tell a story. But he was having a chat with someone who wisely told him that every story teller tells a short story. And as soon as he heard that his mind completely changed, and it was at that moment that I was hooked. We've heard Cook tell a story over a full album before, but never have we heard a short story from David. So I am immensely excited to see how that will turn out.

Today as I write this it is October 23rd, and there have been two puzzle pieces to the EP cover revealed. I'd like to make a prediction on what I think the name of the EP will be. With the first few letters unveiled, looking how it's centred, it should be a 9 lettered word that starts with "CHRO". My guess is "Chronicle". Which is a fantastic name. I don't want to get into the name too much just in case this isn't the name but when the name is released I'll give my full thoughts, but if this is the name, I'm very happy with it.

It's a good time to be David Cook fan right now, new single released, release date, name and full cover art to come "soon", a new direction for sound. I hope if you were taken back by the changes David has made with the sound and the EP format, my thoughts on it all have helped you to be just as excited as I am now or have helped you warm up to the idea of it all. And I am extremely excited. I can't wait to get my vinyl in the mail. And if you haven't pre-ordered your copy of the EP on Pledge Music, do so, I'm positive you won't be disappointed.

Leave me your own thoughts and opinions, I'd love to hear from some fellow David Cook fans! "It’s an instant reaction You’re like the drug inside my vein Another welcome distraction One more shot of Novocaine"
